This special issue of BULALAKAW is solely devoted to the BUGANG RIVER, which recently won the national award as the cleanest river in the Philippines. Most of the articles are from the members of the PAGTATAP Youth, a very important auxiliary arm of PAGTATAP Foundation.
The municipality of Pandan, Antique, is very fortunate to have this group of civic-minded teenagers who are very active in the community and vigilant towards the preservation and protection of their environment and cultural legacy. They are there and everywhere when helping hands are needed. The yearly clean up of the Bugang River is one of their many projects.
With the exuberance of their youth, these teenagers have channeled part of their energies into worthy causes. They take their responsibilities seriously, but also in the spirit of learning, fun, and adventure as you can gauge from their writings.
Life's lessons are played out in this issue through the eyes of the PAGTATAP Youth. We have what amounts to a story of celebrating nature, of getting a sense of how important it is to be caretakers of the land and our legacy, to preserve the future for generations that come after us. We take our inspiration from the Bugang River and the teenagers who toil relentlessly to keep it clean and intact. It is worth remembering that just beyond the walls that keep us safe and sound is a world worth preserving, worth admiring, and worth discovering.
Cheers,
Thelma Mantac Ramos
