Pandan is proud of its Bugang-Malumpati River System which has been consistently judged by the Gawad Pangulo sa Kapaligiran as one of the country's cleanest inland body of water. The river has cold, clear, and very relaxing waters that anyone can definitely enjoy. It also has a rich historical and cultural heritage. The river's headwater is part of the Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park that has the only remaining low-elevation forest in the Greater Visayas bio-geographical region and considered globally as a "hot spot of endemism."
As such, the Local Government Unit of Pandan initiated a Community Based Eco-Tourism Project for the Bugang-Malumpati river system to showcase its natural beauty and also to present the arts and culture of the community. It is being dubbed as the "Bugang River Cultural Adventure and Nature Trek." The activities for this tourism project include the "ngut-ngut" ritual presentation, buri and bariw bag demonstration, community story- telling, a talk on biodiversity conservation, trekking, swimming and downstream rafting.
A test run was conducted last December 3, 2003 with participants, among others, from the Local Government Support Program (LGSP), the Municipality of Nabas, Aklan and SMART Communications. If you want to experience the same adventure and excitement they had while traversing the Bugang-Malumpati river system, contact the Municipal Tourism Officer of Pandan, Mr. Jude D. Sanchez at malumpati@yahoo.com.
